People First Federal Credit Union is a federally chartered and insured credit union that has been serving the Lehigh Valley in Eastern Pennsylvania for over 65 years.
If you live, work, worship or attend school in Carbon, Lehigh, or Northampton Counties in Pennsylvania or Warren County in New Jersey you can benefit from membership in People First. What’s the credit union difference?
Like all credit unions, People First is a not-for-profit financial cooperative. The credit union is owned and controlled by its members, people with accounts at the credit union.
As a credit union member, you are actually an owner! This means that instead of turning profits over to stockholders, like a commercial bank, credit unions give them back to their members in the form of higher savings rates, lower loan rates, fewer fees, and more free services.
And that makes a very real, everyday difference. You'll find a higher level of personal service and added convenience at your credit union.

You’ll have easy anytime access to your accounts 24/7/365 through all the latest technology, including PC Access online banking, our Mobile Access app, automatic bill payer, online loan and account applications, and much more.
And if you need in-person service, People First has seven strategically located branches throughout the Lehigh Valley, including Allentown, Bethlehem, Nazareth, Trexlertown, and Whitehall. We also have 13 Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) throughout the area to serve you 24 hours a day.

With over $770 million in assets and more than 72,000 members, People First serves more members than any other credit union in the Lehigh Valley.
People First is a federally chartered credit union insured by the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF) which is administered by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), an agency of the federal government. Deposits are insured up to at least $250,000.

As a member-owned, not-for-profit financial institution, People First Federal Credit Union's mission is to provide the highest quality of financial services in a friendly, convenient, personalized atmosphere. The credit union will operate in a financially sound and competitive manner to ensure long-term financial stability while safeguarding member's assets. These financial services will be provided by the credit union staff under the direction of the volunteer officials.
Serving Members Since 1950
In September 1950, People First Federal Credit Union was chartered by the federal government under the name of Mack Local 677 Federal Credit Union, where we exclusively served employees of Mack Trucks, Inc., and their families. Our first credit union office operated at the UAW Local 677 Union Hall in Allentown, PA and in 1968, it occupied a rental space at UAW Local 677 building in Allentown, PA.
In November 1975, it was the first Lehigh Valley credit union to build and occupy its own office at 2211 Mack Boulevard, Allentown PA. In 1982, federal regulations were changed to allow membership to select employee groups (SEGs), and in 1983 KidsPeace (formerly Wiley House) became its first non-Mack Truck Credit Union sponsor company.
In July 1987, the first branch office opened on Chew Street in Allentown, PA. Since that time, People First has expanded membership to a few hundred companies and organizations. By expanding membership, it has helped build the strong financial reputation it now has in the Lehigh Valley.
In January 1989, the credit union name was changed to People First Federal Credit Union. In addition to increasing its field of membership, it increased services and locations. The credit union moved from a “savings and lending” institution to a “full-service” institution. It also moved its main location to 2141 Downyfake Lane, Allentown, PA in July 1995.
In February 2002, the credit union received approval to change from an Occupational Charter Credit Union to a Community Charter Credit Union. This allows anyone who lives, works, worships, or attends school in Lehigh or Northampton counties to become a member. As of February 2021, People First has over 72,000 members with total assets over $775,000,000.
As of June 1, 2021, People First expanded its field of membership to include Warren County, NJ and Carbon County, PA.
Credit Union - FAQs
Most financial institutions are owned by stockholders, who own a part of the institution and intend on making money from their investment. A credit union doesn't operate in that manner. Rather, each credit union member owns one "share" of the organization. The member of credit union is also an owner, and is even entitled to vote on important issues, such as the election of member representatives to serve on the board of directors.
People First is service oriented, locally operated and is a not-for-profit, member-owned financial cooperative. We have a democratic operating philosophy and a volunteer board of directors. All members have a voice in how the credit union operates. We offer lower rates on loans and pay higher dividends on savings. We charge minimal or no fees. A credit union is dedicated to serving its members' financial needs in a low-cost, efficient manner.
Other financial institutions tend to merge, change names or even go out of business. They are profit-based and stockholder owned. They tend to charge higher rates on loans and are more likely to charge fees and require minimum balances. They are often owned and operated by out-of-state or foreign investors.
Yes. Your savings are federally insured to at least $250,000 per separately titled account and backed by the full faith and credit of the United States Government. The National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), an independent agency of the U.S. Government, manages the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund which provides federal insurance. This fund is one of the safest you'll ever find and is not funded by taxpayer dollars.
The National Credit Union Administration is an agency of the federal government. It is responsible for making sure all credit unions are operating soundly. It acts as our regulatory and supervisory agency.
